Attached text: Canal Street in New Orleans is the widest "main" street to be found in any large city in the United States. It serves as the dividing line between the Vieux Carre, or old city, and the new, modern city. It was named for a waterway which was planned but never actually dug. Canal Street is now the center of the city's retail shopping area.

Attached text: Canal Street in New Orleans is the widest "main" street to be found in any large city in the United States. It serves as the dividing line between the Vieux Carre, or old city, and the new, modern city. Canal Street is 170 feet wide and includes two 21-foot sidewalks; two 41-foot vehicular roadways and a 46-foot neutral ground in the center. It was named for a waterway which was planned but never actually dug. Canal Street is now the center of the city's retail shopping area.
