Historical Note

Grauman Marks was born in Louisville, Ky. He graduated from the University of Kentucky and, in 1926, received a law degree from Harvard University. The following year, he moved to Cincinnati, where he served first as the Hamilton County Assistant Prosecutor and then entered private practice.

Marks was also an amateur photographer, an afficianado of New Orleans jazz and a frequent visitor to New Orleans.

Scope Note

The photographs include photographs of jazz performances, primarily at Preservation Hall in New Orleans. Also included are a variety of scenes of New Orleans and the surrounding area.

The Louisiana State Museum, Tulane University's Hogan Jazz Archive, Preservation Hall, and the Cincinnati Museum Center also hold photographs by Grauman Marks. The Cincinnati Museum Center also holds the Grauman Marks Papers, relating primarily to his professional career in Ohio.
