Photograph Collection
Please Note: The Allison prints and negatives have been sent out-of-house for scanning and, unless among the images presented below, are unavailable for use at this time. We will continue to add additional scans as the project progresses. For further information, please contact the archivist.
Alexander Allison, a long time civil engineer with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, was also an amateur photographer. He shot many images of New Orleans houses, buildings, street scenes, churches, cemeteries, statues, port activities, Mardi Gras, and more.
In 1953, Mr. Allison donated 323 4x5 prints of his work to the Library.
Following his death in 1964, Mr. Allison's daughter gave additional prints nd his entire collection of negatives to the Louisiana Division. The Allison Collection includes one group of photographs taken during the period 1905-1915 and a second group dating from 1948-1952.
Some of the negatives do not match the titles/descriptions that Allison wrote on the original negative envelopes. We have attempted to match negatives to the correct information but some educated guesses were necessary. In some cases we have added descriptive information not included by Allison. If you notice any inaccurate information for any of the Allison photographs, please let us know (e-mail Wayne Everard (weverard@bellsouth.net)).
