The Louisiana Division's Photograph Collection includes over 40,000 individual photographic prints, negatives and slides. Major subdivisions of the collection are:

General Interest Collection

Arranged by general subject heading, these photographs were collected from numerous sources.

Municipal Government Collection

Arranged under the city agency that produced or collected the photographs.

Oversize Collection

An artificial collection of prints larger than 8x10. These are arranged in a single numerical sequence for which an index is in progress.

Special Collections

Individual collections organized by name of photographer or collector. The larger collections are further subdivided by general subject heading.

For most of the General Interest and Special Collections we have prepared photocopies of the individual photographs for reference use. One photocopy of each original is filed in collection "shelf list" order and a second copy is filed in a separate subject binder according to the placement of the original photograph within the collection's subject arrangement. There are no restrictions to the use of the binders of photocopies. Original photographs are available to registered researchers by appointment.

Inventories and other finding aids for the photograph collection will be added to these pages as they become available. For information on collections not listed below, please contact one of the archivists in the Louisiana Division.
