The cover of Thirty Years and Five Governors: That's PAR, 1980

In 1980, John Wilds, Chase's colleague at the States-Item, was commissioned to write a history of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (or PAR), on the occasion of its 30th anniversary as a private watch-dog agency for state government. Wilds chose John Chase to illustrate the volume, the cover of which is shown here. Chase's true-to-life portraits of Louisiana governors (clockwise from top) Edwin Edwards, John McKeithen, Earl Long, Jimmie Davis and Robert Kennon indicate that Chase was a gifted artist as well as a caricaturist.
