Spanish Fort, ca. 1910. Originally built in the early 1700s, this fortification on Bayou St. John near Lake Pontchartrain was used to defend the city from its enemies until the early part of the nineteenth century. In later years it was the focal point for an amusement park along the bayou. The guns and cannon balls have long since disappeared from the site, but the old fort's foundations remain a favorite place for picnicking children to explore.
