Six people died and several more were seriously injured in the tragic Rault Center fire of November 29, 1972. Actually, there were two fires in the Gravier Street highrise that day. The first was relatively minor; the second was the fatal one. Every piece of NOFD equipment responded to the second alarm. They were joined by several units from Jefferson Parish. Unfortunately, none of the trucks had ladders long enough to reach the victims on the fifteenth floor of the building. Fireman worked hard to reach them from inside the structure, but time ran out on their valiant efforts.
