On New Year's Day, 1955, an fire destroyed the Crown Theatre in the 1400 block of Almonaster Avenue. The loss was estimated at $100,000. Sixteen NOFD units responded to the alarm early that morning. Superintendent Howard L. Dey and eight firefighters narrowly escaped being crushed when the theatre's front wall collapsed. Note part of the fallen sign in the front left of the photo.
