Harry Houdini, bound in chains, just before he stepped from the steamboat J.S. into the Mississippi River. It took him only thirty seconds to work free from the Parish Prison-supplied shackles and return to the river's surface. Close to 10,000 New Orleanians stood in the rain at the foot of Canal Street to witness the great artist's performance.
