The work of upgrading the sewerage and drainage system which began in the 1930s and 1940s continued during the 1950s, when the S&WB engaged in the biggest expansion program in its history. As part of the massive public improvement projects carried out during the administrations of Mayor deLesseps S. Morrison, the Board continued to cover open canals (among them the canals under South Claiborne, Paris Avenue, Orleans Avenue, Florida Avenue, Lamarque Avenue, Mirabeau Street and St. Anthony Street) and to install new drains. It also laid a giant 50-inch water main from the Water Purification Plant on South Claiborne all the way to Gentilly.

These two little boys took advantage of the construction to play one of the best games in the world: follow the leader across Sewerage and Water Board pipes.
