Opening of Spring Fiesta, City Park Stadium, 1942.

There is some confusion about this photograph. Although the Amardeil album identifies the date as 1942, the Times-Picayune says that the opening ceremony at City Park Stadium was called off in 1942, for the first time in the 5-year history of the event, because of wind and rain. Perhaps the photo was taken before the storm rolled in, or perhaps the date is off a year or two.

The annual event was first organized in 1937 to promote tourism and celebrate "the best traditions of New Orleans." Spring Fiesta, held each year in March, included (then, as now) concerts, and an opera (in some years), art exhibits, a pageant, tours of gardens, plantations, and historic New Orleans homes (with hostesses in authentic costume), and the crowning of the Spring Fiesta queen.
