Archeology Project

The WPA also sponsored archeological digs in various parishes, including Orleans, where archeologists searched for evidence of Native American culture.

The caption on the photograph reads, "WPA workers of the Archeological project studying soil profile in an Indian mound two miles from N.O. Airport near Lake Pontchartrain. From this site, WPA archeologists are unearthing evidence of an Indian culture which they believe is the oldest yet discovered in the Mississippi Valley. They have named the culture the Tchefuncta Period." Photo taken August 3, 1939.
