Federal Archives Survey Project

Among the tasks undertaken by the Federal Archives Survey Project was the transcription of the registers and enrollments of vessels in the Port of New Orleans, kept by the U.S. Custom Office. A typewritten copy of the product of this effort, Ship Registers and Enrollments of New Orleans, Louisiana, in six volumes, is available in the Louisiana Division of NOPL.

The caption for this photograph, taken on April 17, 1940, reads, "WPA white collar workers are indexing and modernizing many valuable records to aid lawyers, students and researchers." The WPA also indexed newspapers and public records and prepared inventories and transcriptions of historic documents housed in parish courthouses, municipal archives, and other repositories statewide. Researchers continue today to benefit from their labor.
