Images of the Month Gallery
As we did in September 2003, we again turn to the Annual Report of the Mayor for this month's images. This time, the images are taken from the report covering the fiscal year May 1955 - May 1956 -- 50 years ago. The mid- to late-1950's were times of enormous physical change in New Orleans. Major new buildings, both public and private, were going up; slums were coming down. Streets and bridges were being built or rebuilt. Much of the city's infrastructure was being made anew. Mayor deLesseps S. Morrison was in his tenth year in office, and the 1955-1956 annual report celebrates what he calls his "Decade of Progress." |
