Dr. Charles Midlo was himself a collector of bookplates. A 1955 Times-Picayune article reported that his collection numbered some 6000 plates. A display of his collection at NOPL at that time sparked interest locally and prompted Mrs. Martha Westfeldt, of the Friends of NOPL, to begin soliciting bookplates for the library's permanent collection. This rather grisly bookplate (appropriate, however, to its owner's profession as a physician) is one of several of Dr. Midlo's personal bookplates in the Louisiana Division's collection.
