Francois Xavier Martin was a major contributor to the development of Louisiana jurisprudence -- the first attorney general of Louisiana, judge of the Superior Court of the Territory of Orleans, and judge of the State Supreme Court (1815-1846). He also authored several landmark legal reference works, including his Reports of cases in the Superior Court of the territory of Orleans, and in the Supreme Court of Louisiana, more popularly known as "Martin's Reports. The Italian motto on his bookplate, ed io anche translates "and I also."
