This is one of a large number of medical bookplates in the collection, probably originating from the donation of the Miss Rogers and Mrs. Palfrey; Miss Rogers was the librarian of the Tulane University School of Medicine. This plate honors Mary Elizabeth Bass (1876-1956), one of New Orleans' earliest female physicians. Dr. Bass began practicing medicine with her sister Cora Bass in 1904. She also helped to found the New Orleans Teaching Dispensary for Women and Children and taught at the Tulane Medical school for thirty years. She also founded the collection of books at the Tulane Medical School Library that bears her name.
