This month we feature a selection of slides showing scenes from New Orleans during the late 1940s and 1950s. At that time in its history the Crescent City was just beginning to develop into a modern urban center following years of depression and war. Between 1946 and 1960 the city underwent an explosion in building activity, a drastic change in transportation patterns, and a resurgence in tourism and international trade.

The Crescent City, of course, is still changing. In many ways, the city today is as different from what is was in 1960 as it was then different from the New Orleans of 1946. These images from a half-century ago remind us of just how much that difference is.
