Niobeans presented its annual ball at the Municipal Auditorium on January 10, 1969 with a tableau based on the novel Doctor Zhivago. King George Dendinger and the Niobean court joined guests in viewing "a large cast of characters that were drawn from every level of an intricate society undergoing the agonizing trials of the first world war, the Communist Revolution and the painful birth of a new state."

In the words of Arthur B. Lacour, "Although a group of ladies prominent in social and occupational circles became active in civic and public work early in 1941, it was not until after the war ended that the Krewe of Niobeans celebrated the memory of their mythological namesake by presenting their first colorful masquerade in 1946."
