Insane Asylum of the State of Louisiana
The central building of the Asylum (now known as East Louisiana State Hospital) is still standing and has earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The structure was erected shortly after the Asylum's establishment in 1847. Although the city of New Orleans had its own facility for the care of the insane as early as 1854, it was common practice early on to send most patients up to the state institution in Jackson.
