Images of the Month Gallery
April 2007

One hundred years ago the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans was in the midst of building the Crescent City's water, drainage, and wastewater systems. Now, the Board is engaged in a long-term rebuilding effort necessitated by the instability of local soils, financial limitations, and, of course, the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina and the floods that followed on its heels. The Board estimates that at least $1.9 billion will be needed to put the system back into good working condition.

This month's Gallery visits the S&WB's initial construction project with the photographs used to illustrate its 1907 Annual Report. For other early views of the Board's activities and staff, see our recently posted series of Alexander Allison's Sewerage and Water Board photographs.
