One hundred years ago the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans was in the midst of building the Crescent City's water, drainage, and wastewater systems. Now, the Board is engaged in a long-term rebuilding effort necessitated by the instability of local soils, financial limitations, and, of course, the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina and the floods that followed on its heels. The Board estimates that at least $1.9 billion will be needed to put the system back into good working condition.
