- Class Action Lawsuits Dealing With Katrina:
- MRGO
A judicial decision came down allowing a case against the Army Corp of Engineers / MRGO / and the flooding of St. Bernard Parish and East New Orleans to proceed. The first step for a citizen to join a class action suit against the government is to fill out a Standard Form 95 (SF95). The form needs to be filled out and mailed to the feds informing them that you as a citizen plan to join a lawsuit. When a patron goes to see a lawyer about joining the lawsuit, the lawyer's first words are "go to the library and fill out a SF95 and we will be in touch later". Many law firms have set up sites that have a link to a pdf version of SF95. Here is one:
- www.katrinajustice.com (best instructions are on this site, which tell you where to mail the forms -- in triplicate)
Another site where the SF95 form and instructions can be found is here:

Engineers under the Federal Tort Claims Act
- Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office (OPCSO) Strip Search Class Action Settlement
- This lawsuit claims that the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office (OPCSO) conducted illegal “strip” and “visual body cavity” searches on people who were arrested for minor offenses not involving weapons or drugs, who, before their first court appearance or release, were transferred from the OPCSO Intake and Processing Center to general population. This lawsuit claims that these searches were done as part of a blanket policy which was in violation of the right to be free from an unreasonable search and the right to privacy. This lawsuit has been going on for over six years and covers strip and visual body cavity searches conducted from April 25, 1999 through May 21, 2003.
