Nicholas Girod died on Sept. 1st, 1840, and by his will bequeathed to the Mayor of the City of New Orleans $100,000.00 for the purpose of establishing an institution to support and educate orphan boys of French descent. |
(After much litigation only about $28,000 of the original $100,000 was left which by the "judicious investments" of various succeeding mayors this this amount was brought up to over $81,000 as of January 1860. The papers were destroyed by fire in 1867 and according to an accounting made in 1870, the fund showed an amount of over $75,000, a large part of which was used to erect buildings in the rear of Metairie Ridge to be used for an orphanage, leaving a balance of only $639.55 to the credit of the fund. It appears that these buildings were never utilized and this ordinance is to offer them for lease for a period of 99 years. See also 1480 AS. |
