Historical Note
John D. Lambert served on the New Orleans City Council from 1970-1976 as Councilman for District “D". His district encompassed mid-to-eastern
parts of New Orleans, including areas in the 7th, 8th and 9th Wards, the Gentilly neighborhood, and the University of New Orleans, or LSUNO
(Louisiana State University of New Orleans) as it was known in his time. During his term he served on the City Planning Commission. The records in the collection span the
years 1970-1971 and contain miscellaneous correspondence, constituent concerns, research and studies for the proposed lead abatement ordinances 4957 and 4990, maps and documents from City Planning Commission hearings, and
a large file started by his predecessor, Councilman-at-Large John J. Petre, on the defunct Riverfront Expressway.
Biographical Note
Born in the 8th Ward of New Orleans in the Gentilly neighborhood and residing in the 7th Ward at the time of his election, John D. Lambert was
a practicing attorney at his own family firm. He received his degree from Loyola University Law School in New Orleans and taught business law
courses there until the time of his successful council seat campaign. Lambert ran for a place in the Louisiana State
House of Representatives in the summer of 1969 prior to his service on the City Council, but was not elected.
Scope and Contents
The inventory below represents the entirety of the records transferred by the office of Councilman John D. Lambert to the City Archives.
The records span the years 1970 to 1971 and contain approximately 300 paper records and correspondences, twelve handwritten notes, three telegrams, eight zoning maps,
one aerial survey map and ephemera including three bumper stickers, three brochures, two postcards, two envelopes, one full-page newspaper clipping, and one invitation.
The nature of the paper records include City Planning Commission meeting minutes, correspondence with citizens and City officials, thank-you notes, memos,
citizen petitions and grievances, and advertisements and solicitations from various companies and organizations.
