Addendum
[added 2/18/1998]

Louisiana Division staff members and volunteers have spent ten years putting together a card index to the marriage records of the New Orleans Justices of the Peace for the period 1846-1880. The index is almost complete and occupies three card catalogs. One of the last volunteers to work on the project used his personal computer to generate the cards. We were able to use his data to create what amounts to a "sample" of the full index. That "sample" is available through this web page.

Each index entry displays the names of both spouses (each record is entered twice, one with groom's name in the first cell and again with bride's name in the first cell), date of record, and call number of the record volume in which the full record may be found. Within the record volumes entries are in chronological order. The page numbers shown in the index do not appear on the pages in the microfilmed volumes.

A few words of caution:

  • Some of the cells in the index tables contain corrupted data. Since this is a "sample" of the full index, we have not attempted to correct these problems. We can search the card index for the missing data (see below for search guidelines/costs).
  • Some of the names in the index are misspelled. Volunteers have attempted to correct spelling errors, but archives staff members have not had an editorial hand in the project.
  • The indexes are formatted for Netscape tables, but will display reasonably well with text-only browsers.

We can photocopy individual records (from the microfilm) for a charge of $2.00 each (we limit requests for copies to five at one time) if you supply the exact reference with your request. We will also search the card index for names not included in the sample (or for names with corrupted data) for a fee of $3.00 each (limit of five per request); if we find a match we will photocopy the record at not additional cost.
