CODE BOOK: NEW ORLEANS INDENTURES, 1809-1843
The index is compiled from a data base containing information from all indenture documents in the five volumes in which they were collected by the Office of the Mayor of New Orleans. The principal variables in the data set are listed below. They show ways in which each indenture could differ from others: general features of the document such as its type, date and language, the characteristics by which individuals named in the documents were identified, inferred characteristics like literacy, and the terms of the contract. Links are provided to graphs showing some of these variations. For the purposes of the code book, the three parties to the indenture are identified as apprentice, sponsor, and master, although these terms do not fit all types of indentures.
