Shelley Stephenson Midura was born in New Orleans and grew up in the Lakeview section of the city. She graduated from Isidore Newman School in 1984 and received a
Bachelor's Degree in 1988 from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. After graduation, she joined the U.S. Foreign Service and worked in Washington D.C.
and abroad for the next 10 years. After her return to New Orleans, she assisted in the founding of the International School of Louisiana (ISL), the first foreign
language-based charter school in the state.
In 2006, Midura was elected to the City Council for District A, defeating incumbent Jay Batt. During her tenure, she served as Chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee,
the Utilities Committee, and the Special Committee on Mental Health. She also served on the Competitive Selection, Criminal Justice, Education, Election Code and
Reapportionment, Public Works, Sanitation and Environmental Enforcement, Special Disaster and Recovery, and Women's Committees. In 2009, she announced that she would not
seek relection in 2010. She was succeeded in the District A seat by Councilmember Susan Guidry.

Councilmember Midura transferred both paper and born-digital records. The paper records are subject/correspondence files which, for the most part, reflect the day-to-day business handled by the District A office. The email files are limited to incoming correspondence sent to Councilmember Midura or her staff. In transferring the paper records to the City Archives, Councilmember Midura's staff followed an approved retention schedule. The retention schedule, however, was not followed in transferring the email, which includes much correspondence of a very transitory nature, such as unsolicited/junk emails, press releases from other agencies copied or forwarded to the office, City Council media advisories, reminders for meetings and events, etc. No attempt has been made to weed these transitory messages. Outgoing emails were not transferred to the City Archives; however, since some of the incoming messages are replies to messages sent by Midura or her staff, some outgoing messages are represented. |
The email files have been copied to DVD for in-house use. The directory structure of the folder titles on external hard drive on which the files were transferred,
listing the main topics covered by the email, can be viewed here: Email, 2007-2010. A printout of the subject lines of each email is
available for in-house use. About 390 email files had filenames too long to allow the messages to be copied to the DVD. These file names were shortened for the purpose of
copying and these emails were burned to a separate DVD. The original file names were retained in the perservation copies of the email and in the printout noted above.
The paper files were assigned box/folder numbers reflected in the inventory. The inventory is arranged into the following series and listed alphabetically or
chonologically by folder title within specific series:
