Biographical Note

Arnold “Arnie” D. Fielkow, a native of Appleton, Wisconsin, received a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University and a Juris Doctor, in 1981, from the University of Wisconsin School of Law. He began his professional career as an attorney in Chicago, focusing primarily on sports management and law. Before moving to New Orleans as the Executive Vice President for the New Orleans Saints, Fielkow served as President and General Counsel of the Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs and as President of Minor League Baseball's AA Association. Previously, Fielkow served as Deputy Commissioner and General Counsel of the Continental Basketball Association, the official developmental league of the NBA.

In May 2006, Fielkow was elected Councilmember-At-Large for the City of New Orleans and was then reelected for a second term in February 2010. On August 1, 2011, he resigned his position on the City Council to accept a position as the CEO of the National Basketball Association’s Retired Players Association.

Following his resignation, Fielkow’s term as Councilmember was completed by his former Chief of Staff, Eric Granderson.

Scope Note

Councilman Fielkow transferred both paper and born-digital records.

The paper records are subject/correspondence files. A large portion of the files are related to the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) and Fielkow’s efforts to reform and revitalize NORD through the creation of its successor commission, the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC). Other files include projects of special interest to the Councilman, such as youth recreational activities and adoption advocacy. Finally, files and documents reflect the day-to-day operations of his office.

In transferring the records to the City Archives, Councilmember Fielkow’s staff followed a pre-approved retention schedule; therefore, nearly all documents transferred were retained. The exception is a group of routine grant applications for COPE funding (community support grants provided by Harrah's New Orleans Casion); a 10% sample of these grant applications was retained.

In addition to the paper records, two members of Councilmember Fielkow's staff -- Danielle Viguerie (Director of Communications) and Sayde Finkel (Director of Special Projects) -- transferred born-digital documents on two flash drives (1.81 GB and 117 MB). The files include correspondence (primarily outgoing), press releases and statements, speeches, meeting agendas and notes, reports, photographs, and other documents reflecting the business of the Council-At-Large office. File types are limited almost exclusively to those produced by Microsoft Office software (Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel) and to PDF, and to jpeg and tiff image files.

Both the paper and the digital files include some records from the interim term of Councilmember Eric Granderson, Fielkow's successor.

The digital files have been copied to DVD for in-house use. The directory structure of each flash drive can be viewed below:

The paper files were boxed, for the most part, as sent by the Councilmember's office. The inventory below re-sorts the folders by alphabetically by the folder title used in the office.
