| Jacob Stihl, male, white, aged 23 years, single, a native of Switzerland. Recommended his commitment to the State Insane Asylum, on January 3d, 1883, finding him suffering from Melancholy.
It is with difficulty that any thing can be obtained from him except the fact – that – he has sinned, and that – God may forgive him for his sins. To most questions asked he answers, “If God says so, or if God is willing”. He will prostrate himself on his knees, implore God Almighty, the Holy Ghost, & remains apparently in prayers for an hour or more.
He is a Swiss, has been in this country since last May. Some of his countrymen have expressed the belief that nostalgia might be at the bottom of his troubles. I have been unable to find out from him, whether he has relatives in Switzerland. The Swiss Consul has written to his home, to find that out*.
March 9th/82 [sic]. Left asylum, in statu quo [sic], to go back to his home in Switzerland.

This unfortunate creature was picked, on Feb 1st/83, roaming about the streets and charged by the officer (Armstrong) with being insane. Her conversation is very incoherent. All I can make is that her troubles are here? - showing the praecordial region. This led me to inquire if she had any husband & children. She says her husband is up there (heaven) & her children, to the number of 4, are dear. She speaks German. From this I suppose that she is German by birth & that afflictions might have been the cause of her insanity.

When away from home at the Police Jail or Parish Prison for instance, he is quiet & in-offensive. At home, he is dangerous to the family. Attempts to kill his mother, speaks & tears things up generally. His speech is uncertain. He seems to be unable to articulate at times evidently says one word for another, as in patients afflicted with certain brain lesions. If asked to protrude his tongue he does so with difficulty & the organ is very tremulous. If told to hold his arm out extended with the fingers abducted, we see here a slight muscular tremor. From the above I diagnose a lesion, softening of the brain. He is threatened with Gen’l Paralysis. He has been insane for probably over a year. A few months ago he was not as bad as he is now.

Yet nothing about his person denotes sickness of any kind. He has beaten his mother – because she did not want to come to the doctor’s with me [sic] – his father, and a stranger, having himself arrested for the last act. He does not believe in going to court. Anyone does him any thing, “I plug him in the nose”, he says, “that’s better than to go to court. “What do you ask me these questions for? You already asked me that yesterday? Heu! yes, you think I am crazy? You want to see if I will tell you what I told you yesterday, heu!? Well, I am not crazy, my friend, I just tell you that partner, I am not crazy. It’s no use to think of sending me to Jackson, I don’t want to go there.”
He has six toes on r. foot, and six fingers on r. hand. This father says his mother’s mind is not quite right.

This unfortunate lady, a mother of six or seven children & in easy circumstances, first showed symptoms of insanity 4 or 5 years ago. She imagines that her relatives have conspired against her to persecute her, poison her, and even hang her. Her fright of persecution has caused her to attempt suicide.
N- B- March 4th, 1883. last evening she managed to steal a dessert table knife from the mess room, in the La. Retreat, where she was detained until her transfer to Jackson, and though the knife is very dull she managed to cut her throat, opening the wind pipe, a small incision of half an inch, and bled to death, from the subcutaneous (2 in number) arteries. The superficial jugular vein on the left was partially severed. The carotids not even exposed. The incision was through the skin and partly through the s/cutaneous muscles. This she did at about 5 a.m. when alone in her room. Had she done so in the presence of any one, surgical assistance would have saved her.

| Taylor Benjamin alias John the Baptist, male, black, widower, native of Charleston, S-C., 48 years old, recommended his confinement to the S.-I.-A., at Jackson, on March 12th/83, finding him suffering from Religious Mania.
He is excessively talkative, of a good disposition, and attempts to prove to every one that God has sent him to ……..(all sorts of ideas that pass through his head.) He is a carpenter by trade, and said to be a good one, but his religious ideas are such, as to prevent him from listening to what is said to him, about his trade. He talks to the extent of exhausting himself and becoming hoarse.
This man died on Sunday, March 25th/83 at about 1 P.M. Before dying, he had complained for a day or two of being sick. He slept very little if any at night, was constantly screaming. When he died, he died very quietly. An autopsy, made two (2) hours after death, revealed but little heat of abdominal cavity, and an increased heat in the brain. The finger placed in the longitudinal fissure felt a heat which did not exist in the abdominal cavity, showing an increased temperature of the Brain. This was accounted for, by the pathology of the Pia-Mater. It was strongly adherent, all over, to the brain substance, thickener [sic] and in suppuration. The Brain & Arachnoid & Dura Mater seemed normal. The ventricles of the Brain contained a larger amount of fluid than is usually found. There was no softening nor congestion of the Brain or its meningies – The Blood was anaemic, & in consequence a general anaemia of the whole body – Sclerotics quite yellow (bilious) – Except anaemia, the organs of abdomen looked normal. Spleen small; liver if anything, slightly enlarged but bladder filled with bile. Bladder contained over ? [sic] a quart of urine – Thoracic cavity not opened.

Two years ago, this young man, who is an intelligent person, suffered from malarial fevers, and it is said that ever since his mind has been deranged. At first his mania seems difficult to be discovered, on account of his lucid reasoning. Two or three months ago he was brought to me, but I was unable them to discover his weak point. To-day, I find out that he is persecuted by spirits – flying about his room & person, that they torment him, and when he imagines himself too much persecuted by them, he becomes furious, blasphemous and even obscene. He says that he is persecuted not prosecuted. He has a tremulousness in the upper extremities, especially if asked to extend them & open the fingers. He imagines himself very sick & weak, the result of spiritual persecutions.

He is in a state of excessive hilarity. Laughs, jumps, claps his hands, runs at a great speed across the room, sets down jumps up again, puts his hand in your pocket, in a word does not remain two minutes quiet. At the station house, I found him in his cell, having torn his shirt to pieces, broken the lamps glass with his shoe, and laughing at his deeds. A month or two ago, he was arrested. He had robbed a ladder at night, brought it to the police station (Algiers), and there was asking for the loan of a hatchet that he might fix it, to enable him to light all the street lamps of Algiers. The citizens of Algiers complain of his night prowlings & thefts, and fear that he may some night be shot as a thief, if he be not placed in a safe place.

A year ago, or more, during the winter, without any known cause to his parents, he had an acute attack of mania, lasting 3 or 4 hours. Since then, he has been unable to obtain work anywhere, or do any work, and consequently has been idle. He cannot bear the sight of his father, denies that the man be his father, though he can give no reasons for such a denial, and strikes him. He has also struck his mother. He says his name is Stiff, and not Pichet, because Mike gave him that name. He breaks things about the house, & throws them out, through the window. He answers sluggishly to questions, at times properly, and then again stupidly.
Physically, he is not well. He is apparently well developed, but a close examination shows a contracted chest, and a general lack of development of the muscular system. Dullness at apex of right lung. His father is tuberculous. I suspect a tuberculous affection of the brain.
N.B. His father & mother instead of sending him to Jackson have delaid [sic] until this day, Dec 7th/83.

This lady reasons her case so very well as to induce the belief that she is not insane. A close examination will show her to be nervous, excitable, and will force her to admit that she is jealous of her husband, that she strikes & slaps her daughters (grown children); that she accuses them of attempting to poison her with Arsenic, and yet she is unable to give any reasons for such suspicions. She does not sleep at night; or but very little, scarcely eats through fear of being poisoned. She belongs to that class of insanity so well described by Trelat under the title of “La Folie Lucide.) – Members of her family are said to have died insane. This woman has been insane for nearly 10 years. Has been in the Texas State Insane Asylum for nearly 3 years. Has been married 19 years, and never had any children. Her mania now (in words) is to beat, strike, and kill. She threatens constantly everybody and even to drown herself. She wishes to go to a crazy house, in order to strike, beat, and kill the inmates. Her husband informs me that about ten years ago or more, five physicians, in Texas, opened her belly and passed the bowel inside, in order to remove a tumor on the right side, but removed nothing. Then a needle or two or more were passed through the skin into the tumor to immobilize it. One or two of the needles broke inside the belly & were left in there. Finally Dr. A. W. Smythe operated her for a floating kidney & removed the right kidney, the tumor above mentioned. It was subsequent to the first operation that she became insane, and judging from the informations [sic] given by her husband as also from present appearances she has been gradually growing worst [sic].

He says that a few days ago, he heard loud noises and it was or he was told it was, large number of people who were killed. If asked who were killed? he answers he does not know as he did not go out. If asked who told him so, he answers he supposes the spirits. He is tuberculous, has sunken chest parieties, and a cough. Says he has been or is sick, but is unable to say what he has or has had.
