Mrs. August Lafon vs. United Firemen's Insurance Company

This suit was filed on March 24, 1914. Mrs. Lafon was the owner of the property at 3804 Cleveland Avenue (corner South Cortez) that was damaged in a fire on June 26, 1913. She apparently sued the company for $2000 over a claim arising from the fire. The surviving suit records do not include pleadings or a final judgment. The matter was assigned to docket 4 of the Court; NOPL's Civil Courts Collection does not include the docket 4 docket books.

The record includes:

  • transcripts of testimony by four witnesses for the plaintiff and twelve for the defendant.
  • transcript of an investigation of the fire by the State Fire Marshall (with testimony from thirteen witnesses).
  • record from the First City Criminal Court in the matter of the State vs. Albert Bousha for arson
  • letters relative to estimates for repairs to the property, other fires and weather conditions around the time of the Cleveland Street fire
  • two photographs of the property taken on November 16, 1914 (photographs removed to the Louisiana Photograph Collection; for online versions see recent811 and recent812).
