Inventory of the letters, petitions and decrees of the New Orleans Cabildo, the New Orleans Conseil Municipal and the New Orleans Conseil de Ville, 1770-1835
This inventory lists the letters, petitions and decrees received by the legislative bodies of the city
of New Orleans from 1770 through 1835. The individual bodies represented are the Cabildo
(1770-1803), the Conseil Municipal (1803) and the Conseil de Ville (1803-1835). The original
documents were
inventoried by the clerk of the General Council in 1845. The manuscript inventory, in French, was
later translated into English by an unknown translator, possibly part of the WPA project in the City
Archives. A Library volunteer recently transcribed the English translation into a Wordperfect 6.1
document which staff then formatted in
html. We acknowledge errors in this online version of the inventory. Some of them are translation
errors and others are errors in the transcription. Rather than spend additional months perfecting
this version, we have elected to put it online "as is." Researchers are advised to search for variant
spellings of proper names and/or to consult the microfilm of the original French manuscript as the
"final authority."
