Historical Note
Isaac Delgado’s 1912 will left the Delgado-Albania Plantation to the City of New Orleans. The will outlined that the proceeds from the operation of the plantation would be used for the Isaac Delgado Central Trades School, the precursor to Delgado Community College.
The Delgado-Albania Plantation Commission was formed to operate the plantation and mill; it sold the house and 10 acres in 1957 to Emily Cyr Bridges. In 2005 this portion was again sold to artist Hunt Slonem. The Delgado-Albania Plantation Commission maintains the sugar plantation.
The 1954 Charter states that the Delgado-Albania Plantation Commission is attached to the Department of Property Management. The Commission consists of five members appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. The City Director of Finance serves as the sixth board member.
The functions of the board are:
Provides for the administration, operation and maintenance of the Delgado Albania Plantation;
Has authority, with the approval of the City Council, to borrow money to produce crops, and mortgage and pledge as security thereof, the crops and chattels of said plantation
Transmits annually to the Board of City Trusts for the account of the Delgado Community College and its successor such portion of the income of the plantation as may be fixed by the City Council.
The Delgado-Albania Plantation Commission has a webpage on the city’s website.
