General Guidelines: Search & Copy Services

  • Requests that do not conform to our guidelines or that do not include the appropriate fee will be returned unanswered.

  • All requests must be sent to the Louisiana Division by regular mail at the address given above. We can not accept requests for copies or searches by phone or email.

  • You must enclose a check or money order (payable to New Orleans Public Library) to cover the total fee for the search(es) requested. We do not recommend that you send cash.

Payment from outside of the United States must be in the form of a check drawn on a U.S. bank in U.S. dollars or in the form of an international postal money order. We will accept cash, although we do not recommend that method of payment.

  • Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of your copies.

  • Indicate the type (e.g., obituary, news article, naturalization, etc.) of search that you wish us to undertake and list the name(s) or subject(s) to be searched, with relevant dates.

  • Individual requests for each type of source must be limited as indicated on our Search & Copy Services page. You may send requests for more than one type of source, but please include separate sheets for each type so that we may assign them to individual staff members more efficiently. (For example, put all of your obituary requests on one sheet of paper, your marriage requests on a separate sheet, etc.)

  • Please do not send requests for searches of types of records not listed on our Search & Copy Services page. If you have questions about additional materials in our collection, give us a call at (504) 596-2610 during the Main Library's regular library hours for information on how we can assist you.

  • The stated fee includes a single photocopy of each article or record found. If multiple references are found, we will inform you of the total amount due for additional photocopying and ask that you submit a new request for the additional copies.

  • If you ask us to search for variant spellings of names, each variant constitutes a separate search and requires a separate fee.

  • We will provide the best copy possible from our microfilm. We cannot guarantee complete legibility of photocopies, due to the quality of some of the microfilm.

  • Please allow approximately 2 weeks for a response. Requests are handled in the order in which they are received, and we cannot accept "rush" orders. Responding to your request accurately is a priority with us, and we will do so as soon as possible. Please do not call to ask about your order until at least two weeks have passed.
