This photograph of Bourbon St., looking toward Canal St., was scanned from a slide taken by amateur photographer Dorothy Violet Gulledge sometime in the 1940s. The streetcar that makes its way down the street is the fabled "Streetcar Named Desire," i.e., the car that ran on the Desire Street line. At the center of the photograph, in the distance, is the dome of the Hibernia Bank, for many years one of the tallest buildings in New Orleans.
[The Gulledge Collection is housed in the Louisiana Division of the New Orleans Public Library.]
