Greater New Orleans Archivists

Name Authority Project

Several years ago, the Greater New Orleans Archivists embarked on a project to build up an informal personal name authority file for use in processing and cataloging original materials produced or collected by individuals connected to the New Orleans area.

The hope is that the project will produce a useful list of local names that may be encountered in the papers and records held at more than one repository in New Orleans. Archivist A, when she encounters letters from Dutch Morial in one of her collections, will be able to use the list to determine that Archives B has already established Ernest N. Morial as the correct authority form.

Additions to the file should be submitted by GNOA members to Wayne Everard (email: nopl@gnofn.org; mail: New Orleans Public Library, 219 Loyola Ave., New Orleans, LA 70112; FAX: 596-2609). Please include a note indicating the resource used to check the entry.

Several WWW-accessible tools are recommended for GNOA members interested in participating in the project:

The Library of Congress Name Authority File
(Choose "Advanced Search Form"--either version--and then select the Name Authority File from the drop-down menu.)
Tulane University's online library catalog: TULANet Voyager
New Orleans Public Library's
Loyola University's online library catalog: LUCIweb
LOUIS: the online library catalogs in the state university system

Listed below, along with the name of the submitting institution and the source of the authorized form of the name submitted, are the names included so far in our local name authority file.
