In December, 1991, members of the Greater New Orleans Archivists agreed to collaborate on a
"documentation analysis," focusing on New Orleans-area holdings in public archives that researchers might use to gather
information about the history, activities, and impact of Carnival in the Greater New Orleans region.
The primary purpose of the project is to make such information more readily available to the public. The project also seeks to assist archival institutions in analyzing their own Carnival-related holdings. Finally, it seeks to identify record types that may be missing from the public domain, with a view, in a cooperative spirit, toward a strategy for acquisitions of Carnival-related materials.
